Firefighters in Ayrshire are taking part in dementia awareness training. This new initiative is a joint venture shared by social services and health, and has been led by local Promoting Excellence trainers Sandra Allan, Rachel McLeod and Derek Lavan.
Promoting Excellence is a learning framework which describes the knowledge and skills we should all aspire to achieve in relation to the roles we have in supporting people with dementia, their families and carers.
The training programme in Ayrshire was constructed to deliver knowledge and skills that Fire Service personnel can use to enhance the way they engage with people with dementia in the community.
The training in Ayrshire is an excellent example of how services can work together to improve the quality of the care and support available for people with dementia, their families and carers. Many people with dementia in Scotland live at home, so taking part in this training has provided local firefighters with a greater insight into the communities they engage with through home fire safety visits.
The trainers firmly believe that dementia awareness training is not just important for those working in health and social service settings, but for society as a whole. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service welcomed the training, as dementia not only affects the people working in the public services it also touches people on a personal level.
The training is currently being delivered at Kilwinning, Ardrossan and Dreghorn Community fire stations and so far 130 firefighters have taken part.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service would like to point out that home fire safety visits are available to all members of the community. If you are interested in a free home fire safety visit please contact 0800 0731 999 or text check to 61611 or visit www.firescotland.gov.ukÂ
