Working with Helm to support young people

Helm is a charity based in Dundee which provides a creative, supportive learning service for people, in particular young people, who face difficult barriers to developing sustainable careers.  Helm engages with individuals in fresh ways, aiming to find the spark that personally engages them.

Since November, we’ve been working with Helm to bring young people into the SSSC’s office on placements.  Our contribution will help make a positive difference to the work that Helm do by allowing them to run new employability projects that will reduce social exclusion, help overcome the problems that have hindered the progress of learners and allow them to continue to reach out to more young people in Dundee and Angus who need support to make the most out of their lives.  By offering 12-week placements we are positively contributing to the Scottish Government’s Youth Employment Strategy. So far we’ve had three young people on placement; Sheila, Rachael and Jed.  Sheila and Rachael both joined our Business Support Team and have been working alongside Business Support Assistants in other parts of the organisation to complete a variety of tasks to assist with the support and development of the organisation.  They’ve helped with tasks such as room and travel bookings, providing support to various departments, time sheet analysis and the preparation of event materials.

Jed has been with our Finance Team and is about to complete his 12-week placement.  Jed has been assisting the team by carrying out a range of general administrative and clerical tasks which support the income section within the finance team.

While at the SSSC the young person completes a Certificate of Work Readiness.  This is an award designed specifically for young people who are ready for their first experience of the world of work but needs some guided support.  The certificate includes a unique employer assessed “real life” work experience placement, providing a meaningful qualification and a credible standard which employers can recognise and trust.
