Pebbles Care, Partners in Care and Radical Services Ltd, a childcare company running small residential homes for young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties, recently held an awards ceremony to recognise young people’s achievements.
Registered Manager, Carol Anne Weir tells us about it:
‘The young people succeed in so many different ways and the staff want to recognise their achievements so they can experience a diverse range of opportunities. This time we decided to organise an awards ceremony, giving us the opportunity to recognise their achievements in a more formal way.
‘The Area Manager for Scotland and the Head of Operations approved our plan and were happy to support and be involved in the event. Once we arranged the date and venue at Lochside Spa Hotel, we asked all our homes and young people to become involved. We held sponsored walks, lucky numbers games, a fun filled sports day where the young people threw sponges at the area manager, a sponsored jailbreak where staff and young people had to travel 35 miles without any money and we also raised money for a piper. In total we raised an impressive £1,976.
‘For the event itself, we agreed the criteria for nominations:
- engaging in education
- engagement in services
- most talented young person
- award of recognition
- sports person of the year
- most outstanding achievement within the home
- additional awards presented to two young people who had left the service who will never be forgotten.
‘Staff nominations criteria were:
- most outstanding house/team
- residential care worker of the year
- motivation and participation
- senior team member
- manager of the year
- award of recognition.
‘The event was grand. Everyone was in formal dress and piped in by a piper. Our senior management team provided the band, a staff member sang and we laid on a lovely buffet.
‘All nominees received framed certificates and category winners received trophies. Everyone received something for their achievements. The young people were involved in the presentation to the winners for each staff/home category and the staff presented the young people. There were two young people who sang on the evening which was the highlight of the night for many.
‘There were young people who had previously been in our care who returned for the event which I think speaks volumes about the care we provide.
‘This was our first awards ceremony and the whole evening was a huge success thanks to all young people and staff who were involved. Hopefully this is the first of many organisational annual events.’
