Standard for Foster Care published

Working with the Scottish Government, we have published the final Standard for Foster Care which sets out learning for foster carers in their role.

We received  lots of good feedback and suggestions through our consultation and a number of events and meetings from a wide range of stakeholders, including foster carers, on how to improve the draft Standard. We are grateful for everyone’s input, particularly the young people who gave us their views. We incorporated these into the final Standard.

There are three documents available on our website.

  1. A summary report on the consultation and the views expressed by participants.
  2. The Standard for Foster Care. This document includes guidance on use of the Standard and delivery of learning. It also details descriptors for each standard at the stages of pre-approval, post approval and continuous professional development
  3. A reader friendly document summarising the main elements of the Standard for Foster Care.

Next steps

Scottish Ministers will consider options for implementing the new Standard in the context of the Independent Care Review when the Chair has announced more details.

The Scottish Government will then set up an expert group to consider a cost analysis and agree a realistic plan and timeframe for foster care providers to implement the new Standard into practice.
