We’ve published our Learning Strategy 2017-20 which outlines how we will work to support workforce development in social services over the next three years. It describes our role in supporting the sector with learning and development and stresses the importance of collaboration and interdependence with strategic partners in some of this work.
The strategy brings together all our learning and development responsibilities and will guide our activity to support employers and workers to learn in a way that suits them and meets the needs of people using services.
Our vision is that social service workers feel supported by us, their employer and others to become self-directing and self-managing learners. We also have a role in supporting employers to develop supportive organisational learning cultures.
SSSC Chief Executive Anna Fowlie said:
‘Significant change and challenge in social services and across public services means we need to change the way we support learning and development. We need to innovate and collaborate in response to public service reform, advances in digital learning and changes in the way services are delivered, like health and social care integration and developments in early learning and child care.
‘As well as this, qualification and learning requirements to support registration mean we need to support the social service workforce to build learning and skills. There needs to be a focused effort on keeping up the momentum created by the uptake and attainment of core qualifications to support workforce regulation but also an expansion of efforts on continuing learning and development for the workforce. Our learning strategy provides a focus for our work in this area and our contribution to improving outcomes for people using services.
‘We already work extensively with employers, workers, strategic partners and others on a wide range of learning and development activities and this new strategy will help us focus this work.’
An implementation plan detailing how we will work with the sector to support learning and development will support the strategy.
