Newly qualified social workers (NQSW) have six months from the date they start their first social work role to complete their SSSC registration. However, as a NQSW you don’t need to be in social work employment to register with us – you can register as soon as you complete your course and qualify as a social worker.
There’s no need to wait until after your graduation to apply for registration if you gain your qualification in Scotland. We will receive your results from your university as soon as the exam board approve them.
Many employers prefer new recruits to be registered with the SSSC when they start employment as a social worker, so you may want to begin the application process when you start looking for a job.
Getting your application countersigned
For information on who should countersign your application for registration, you can read our guidance here.
Your post registration training and learning
Your post registration training and learning (PRTL) period starts from the date you are registered. Whether registered social workers are in employment as a social worker or not, you’re still required to meet your PRTL requirements.
If you are in full time employment at the time of first registration, you need to complete 144 hours of PRTL within the first 12 months of your registration. If you are not in full time employment at the time of first registration, you have 18 months to complete 144 hours of PRTL.
