We asked our Dementia Ambassadors how they were using the new palliative and end of life care (PEOLC) framework in their role to help make connections between this and Promoting Excellence.
Enriching and Improving Experience. Palliative and End of Life Care: A learning and development framework to support the needs of the health and social service workforce and the Scottish Government’s third dementia strategy were both published this year and we wanted to build connections between the two. We worked with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) on both frameworks.
With more than 800 Dementia Ambassadors supporting dementia learning throughout Scotland, we felt it would be helpful to hear what they thought about the links between their role and the new PEOLC framework. We asked them to share their thoughts and feelings about the framework and how it is supporting them in their practice.
Responses were very positive with Dementia Ambassadors saying the PEOLC framework seemed a ‘very valuable framework from which to structure new, and refresh existing knowledge’. Others said: ‘it will improve care we give to residents on end stage of life.’
One Dementia Ambassador explained they would ‘incorporate some of the framework in our dementia training where this topic is discussed’. Dementia Ambassadors believed that linking the new framework with their current practice would give their staff ‘a more holistic understanding of palliative and end of life care’.
We hope that this positive feedback encourages other Dementia Ambassadors and others working to support people living with dementia, to explore what the PEOLC framework could mean for improving and supporting their practice. We are encouraged that Dementia Ambassadors can see the useful links between supporting people living with dementia to the new PEOLC framework, giving the workforce more confidence in their knowledge and skills.

The PEOLC framework meets commitment 3 of the Scottish Government’s Strategic Framework for Action on Palliative and End of Life Care in Scotland.
The third Dementia Strategy builds on the work of the first and second dementia strategies and Commitment 6 is a clear commitment to improve palliative and end of life care for people with Dementia.
